Sizing Feet

To take accurate foot tracing & measurements follow the steps below.

Place feet on this sheet as indicated. Have the client weight bear so as to achieve accurate tracing. (The foot will spread as weight is applied) When the client is comfortable draw around the foot with a pen at a 45° angle.
How to measure the foot accurately.
  • Number 1 Ask the client to lift their foot up to be able to slide the tape under the foot. The tape needs to go from the first metatarsal head to the fifth head, (the widest part of the foot) do not pull the tape tight but snugly. This measurement will determine how tight the shoe is around the joints when it is made.
  • Number 2 Keep the tape under the foot. Move the tape up the foot to the instep at its highest point of the instep. This measurement will determine how close the quarters ( lacing ) are.
  • Number 3 Place one end of the tape at the front of the ankle then around the base of the heel then back to the tape. This measurement helps with the fit of the heel in to the shoe.
  • Number 4 The Long heel is a very important measurement. Place the tape at the highest point of the instep then go around the heel base in the same way you measured the short heel. This shows how wide the heel is in relation to the instep, it also helps with the instep measurement.
  • Number 5 The metatarsal width measurement is from the first met head to the fifth head. This will determine how wide the shoe will be when finished.
  • Number 6 The ankle width. This is important for the way the shoe will fit around the ankle.
  • Number 7. The ankle circumference. This is important for the way the shoe will fit around the ankle.
  • Number 8. If you require an exact height. The standard back height of shoes are 70mm for men and 65 mm for woman.
For boots only -
  • Number 9 Boot height. Measure up to where the boot will come to on the leg. If you don’t proved this measurement we can not make a boot.
  • Number 10 For the circumference measurement of a boot. Place the tape at the height that you require and measure the circumference. If you don’t provide this measurement we can not make a boot.
Foot Length
  • Number 11 Foot length is from the back of the heel to the longest toe. Record the measurement in box 11 left and 11 right. This is to make the shoe the right length.
